Catharsis
Video art for album promotion Music is Connection by Ryan Keberle & Catharsis
I met Ryan Keberle while working on the immersive music piece Patterns from Nature by composer Quinsin Nachoff. Ryan was one of the soloists assigned to the visual spectrum I designed for this beautiful project. I immediately loved how he plays the trombone, organises music groups, teaches students and his music compositions for other groups.
Ryan was hailed in the Jazz Times International Critics Poll as the #1 Trombonist, a player “of vision and composure”. According to The New York Times he has developed a one-of-a-kind voice both on his instrument and as a composer, earning distinction among jazz’s most adventurous new voices. Ryan has some incredible names on his list of collaborations like David Bowie, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and he has seen the Tiny Desk Concert Stage at NPR from the artist’s perspective. I have been a fan of Tiny desk for many years, that was an extra trigger so so it goes without saying that I am very proud to on that list of his and I am able to play a small part in his project Catharsis. Even though we were far apart, I could work from oversees on the concept and animation, luckily music & art don’t need passports to meet and thrive, they know no boundaries.
About the Hammersparks concept for our Mini Music Movie
Before creating this Mini Music Movie, Ryan and I talked about getting inspired by some values that stick to the vibe and being of Catharsis. Ryan is extremely proud of this group and speaks of a level of chemistry, trust and shared musical language that he has only experienced in a handful of other musical ensembles in his life time. When I first heard Hammersparks, I was immediately struck by the energy and craftsmanship that explodes from this recording. We wanted to have this craftsmanship and the lively vibe resonate in the film. In my research I quickly found wonderful vintage film footage of people cycling. We came up with an ode to the bicycle, which can be seen as a symbol for the energetic engine that is Catharsis and with reference to the craftsmanship of the inventors who, over the years, transformed the device from a walking vehicle to a gearbox that helps to climb mountains. The movement of these cyclists fits the music very well and became the basis for an animation design that takes you on a Sunday stroll with friends.
Come with us on a ride through time and enjoy an abstract landscape between here and there and far away. Let’s keep setting things in motion.
